Deccan Odyssey’ will roll from Jan 16

MUMBAI, Dec 30/2003:

The ‘Deccan Odyssey’, Maharashtra’s answer to Rajasthan’s famed ‘palace on wheels’, will be launched from the Chhatrapatti Shivaji terminus here on January 16.

Built at the integral coach factory near Chennai at an estimated cost of over Rs 30 crore, the ‘Deccan Odyssey’ is a joint venture of the State Government, Railway Ministry and the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC). The luxury train is expected to be flagged off by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The 21-bogey train will tour Mumbai, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Goa, Pune, Aurangabad, Jalgaon and Nashik over a period of seven days. It will have five-star facilities onboard to attract Niche foreign tourists and corporates who will be paying a fare of over Rs one lakh for the sojourn.
The train is expected to make 25 trips a year and is the most ambitious project of the MTDC.

The ‘Deccan Odyssey’ will be the world’s eighth and the country’s third luxury train besides the Rajasthan’s ‘Palace on Wheels’ and ‘royal orient’ of Gujarat. Other such trains are found in countries like United States, Australia, South Africa and Scotland.

Facilities and services aboard this luxury train include two tastefully-designed lounges and a conference coach that will be able to accomodate 50 passengers, allowing them to mix business with pleasure.

Other features comprised speciality restaurtants, gynmasium, beauty shop, yoga centre, ayurvedic treatments and exceptionally well stocked bar, to contribute to the entire experience of luxury. Two restaurants-cum-kitchen cars would serve Indian and continental cuisine. For passengers’ convenience, there is on demand foreign exchange facility on board the train.
The trip will expose the tourists to unique Indian culture. Day one begins with Ganpatiphule, following which a tour of historic temples and forts in the area. The next halt is at Sindhudurg, which was once a naval base of the mighty Marathas.

The next halt will be at Goa, from where it will travel to Mahrashtra’s culture capital, Pune, and a trip around the city. After that, the train will reach Aurangabad where world heritage sites Ajanta and Ellora caves are located. It will return to Mumbai via Nashik. (UNI)
