Enjoy holidays the tribal way
BY MRITYUNJAY BOSE

MUMBAI: Holidaying is touching new dimensions now-a-days. People are now being allowed to experience the tribal culture thanks to Nature Trails. People can now milk cows, learn Warli paintings, pound rice, grind flour, brew mahua liquor, stay on tree tops and thatched huts. The aim of this new initiative is to increase respect for nature.

Nature Trails – which own three properties – Sajan Nature Club and Vikramgadh in the neighbouring Thane district and Durshet Forest Lodge in Raigad – are giving holidayers an all together different experience, which Nature Trails Director Chinmay Divekar says is a different concept in India. "We want people to experience nature, as it is," Divekar, an MBA from Bajaj, said.

In fact, there are no television and no telephones to break the silence.

As far as the Sajan Nature Club – located nearly 70 kms away from Mumbai, is concerned, it is known as adventure resort, spread over 30 acres, is an excellent getaway from the hustle bustle of urban life, with amazing tree tops huts, quaint thatched huts, Tarzan swing, lake to raft, mountain biking, rock climbing, rappelling, commando bridge, treasure hunt and a beautiful waterfall adds to the excitement. "It is something like an encounter with nature," he adds.

Vikramgadh in Thane district is known as botanical garden, spread across five acres and has more than 300 species of fruit/flowering plants, shrubs and trees. It also has a nursery with an exclusive collection of indoor and outdoor plants. This place is favourite among school children, as they come to learn botany. In a year, more then 250 schools visit this place, Divekar said.

On the other hand Durshet is set amidst rambling hillocks overlooking the Sahyadris with the river Amba running adjacent. "This is a private forest and some of the activities include searching for pugmarks," he said. Rifle shooting is also organised here.

Divekar said that the treetops are located at an height of 15 feet. "Such a stay coupled with activities like fishing, cooking the food in tribal way and so on gives people an experience of the tribal life, which otherwise is very difficult to understand and experience," he points out. There are also bird watching sessions. The Sajan Nature Club also produces Gerbera flowers for sale. They have a well-equipped Green House. The plants are tissue cultured and drip irrigation system is used here. It also houses an artificial waterfall.

Mountain climbing, rappelling, river crossing, mountain biking, campfires and jungle cooking and barbeque adds to the adventure of people visiting these places, he said. Once can also experience Warli dance.
