MUMBAI: Fishing is a complex task. When one sails in the choppy seas, there are chances that one might be lost. Similarly, one is not sure about the depth of water or for that matter the number of fishes in a particular area. Now things would be easier for Indian fishermen! Mumbai-based Aerial Services Pvt Ltd (ASPL) is bringing to India a product – which is a mix of GPS and ‘fishfinder’ technology.

The product, which is made by US-headquartered GARMIN, would be launched at the Inmex India international maritime exposition today at the Bandra-Kurla Complex here.“This is going to be a unique product at an affordable price,” ASPL Director A M Lalljee told the Herald yesterday. The product itself would be known as GARMIN and it would be a multipurpose one: it will have a Global Positioning System (GPS) and a “fishfinder” coupled with a device with which one can know the exact depth of water.

“All this will be combined in a single set,” an excited Lalljee said on the eve of launch, during which there would be a live demonstration. One of the biggest challenges for the fishermen is to locate fish in water. “Fishermen can increase their cache by using it. It works on a see-thru technology, which means it can pick up weak and strong signals at the same time so that it separates the fish from thermo clines. It can also assist the user to ascertain the fish by size, shallow and deep water.

Moreover, it will have a zoom feature, it can find fish holding tight at the bottom,” explains Lalljee, adding that it comprises of a high-performance soar and high-resolution screens making fishing easy. It can be used in saltwater and freshwater. Besides this, the product would also come handy for navigation, particularly in high seas. “On a number of occasions the fishermen cross the territorial waters unknowingly and are eventually caught by navies or coast guard of other countries,” he said and added that the device would help the fishermen on board the trawlers about their exact maritime location, while they are sailing. Lalljee, who is the masterstockist of GARMIN products, said that appointment of nationwide dealers for the product is currently on. The main advantage of the product, he said, is that the fishermen can increase their output.
