Pune to have its own high-tech science centre

MUMBAI: Pune, the culture city and education hub of Maharashtra will soon have its own full-fledged science centre. This will be a state-of-the-art centre located in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area neighbouring Pune city. Director-General of Kolkata-based National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) Ingit Mukherjee, who was in Mumbai recently, revealed the plans of two new science centres coming up in Maharashtra – Pimpri-Chinchwad and Solapur. “It is going to be a regional-level centre on the lines we have in Nagpur, Guwahati, Lucknow, Patna and Bhopal,” said G S Rautala, Director of Mumbai-based Nehru Science Centre here yesterday. Rautela told the Herald that the NCSM is in touch with the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PPMC) on this issue. “Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad are twin cities. The new centre will cater to both these places, which has a sizeable population and a huge student population too,” he said and added that the entire project is expected to cost nearly Rs 6.5 crore. The Centre will partly fund the project, which is expected to take 30 months to complete – once the construction starts. The state-of-the-art science centre, said Rautela, will have galleries, exhibition rooms, activity centres and science projects. A society or a trust will be finally formed to run it finally. There would be hands-on and interactive exhibits in this proposed centre. The NCSM runs 29 science museums, centres and parks. “Science centres incorporates innovative ways to communicate science to enthuse, entertain, initiate, excite and bring the developments of science & technology to the doorstep of common people for prosperity, awareness, and improving the quality of life. The centre attempts to enhance public understanding of science and spread scientific literacy,” adds Rautela.
