Actor K.N. Singh dead

MUMBAI, Jan 31 (UNI)/2000—

Legendary film actor K.N. Singh who dominated the Hindi silver screen for more than six decades, died here this morning following a prolonged illness.

He was 91. He is survived by his son Pushkar, a TV film director.
He breathed his last at his residence— "Bhasin Nivas" in Matunga, family sources said.

Kirshan Niranjan Singh popularly known as K.N. Singh had carved a niche for himself by playing the role of villain in his inimitable manner. He acted in more than 250 films.

He came to Bombay in 1937 giving up profession of a lawyer at Dehra Dun. He was discovered by thespian Prithviraj Kapoor. A chance meeting with Kapoor during one of his visits to Calcutta paved his entry into the film industry.

He started his career by acting in "Bhagban". His other films were "Howrah Bridge" Raj Kapoor’s "Aawara", Kishore Kumar’s "Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi", and "Bees Saal Baad". He also acted in "Chhabili" which was made by Shobana Samarth to launch her daughter "Nutan".

His last films were "Ajooba" and "Kaliya" in which Amitabh Bachchan had played the lead role. Known for his roaring voice and expressive eye, he has been immortalised by acting in the roles of dons and villains.

Not many from the current generation remember KN Singh. I have watched many of his movies - he was the sophisticated, suave villain, who didn't yell or shout - he had a certain character of a "gentleman" in him. He was also the villain in the Rajesh Khanna - Tanuja Starrer "Haathi mere saathi"

I will remember him for many years to come.

i was shocked to hear his passing away just days before, though he died several years back, i still believed he was alive till some days back when i read on the net. He was such a thorough gentlman and if you ask me for 10 best villains KN Singh sahab will surely be there among top two if not the best becz Prem Chopra and Prem Nath alongwith Pran sahab also made their mark as villain. He will be sorely missed by all of us. If u ask me i would have seen him last in filmfare awards of 1990's on tv.

Now houseboats and boathouses in Tarkarli MUMBAI: In a bid to boost tourism in the scenic coastal Konkan coast, the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) has introduced two houseboats and a boathouse in Tarkarli in Malvan. "The response from tourists have been very good, and we are encouraged with it," says Abhay Yawalkar, MTDC's Joint Managing Director and Director of Tourism, Government of Maharashtra. One more boathouse will be introduced soon. While the two houseboats – Hiranyakeshi and Karli – are operational for some time now, the boathouse made of bamboo locally, was introduced this month. US sniper attacks revives memories of Raman Raghav and ‘stone man’ MUMBAI, Oct 29/2002: The sniper attacks in the Washington DC area in the US have revived the memories of a dreaded serial killer of this Island city, Raman Raghav and another infamous "stone man".
